Search tips
How to narrow a 3-letter word list
These tips keep the page useful for its own word length instead of treating every letter finder as the same search.
Use exact positions first
A single fixed slot removes many short-word possibilities.
Be careful with exclusions
One wrong excluded letter can remove the answer from a small set.
Switch to A-Z
Alphabetical sorting is useful when the list is already short.

Solving three-letter clues: the middle letter does most of the work
With only three slots, one letter changes everything. In our list, 75.3% of three-letter words have a vowel (A, E, I, O, or U) in the middle, and A alone fills that slot in 19.5% of words. If you know the first and last letters, test the vowels in the middle box before trying consonants. Two known ends leave, on average, only about 4 words with that pair, so the list is usually short enough to read at a glance.
Three-letter words are also where vowel-free words live. The list has 10 words with no A, E, I, O, U, or Y, including BRR, CWM, HMM, NTH, PHT, PST. They are rare, but some word games accept them, so a pattern without vowels is not automatically impossible.
The list is small, 1,300 words, so exclusions are risky: one wrong excluded letter can remove the answer from an already short list. Add excluded letters only when you are sure, then switch to A–Z sorting to scan the rest. Plurals matter less here than at longer lengths. Only 8.2% of three-letter words end in S, against 20.0% of four-letter words, because a three-letter plural needs a two-letter base word.
If you are not sure the answer has exactly three letters, Words With These Letters can search several lengths at once.
